Face to Face: Essence of One
One
We relish in complex concoctions. Be it an abstract fusion in cuisine, melange of eras in an ensemble, or the medley of emotions that a great film can evoke we love a good mixture. However, sometimes things are good just as they are. In a world where singularity is too often disregarded this can be difficult to fathom, yet not so much when you think of something as simple as water; yes a chemical compound but a singular source nonetheless. Beauty products containing a single ingredient are overlooked for savvy, science-informed mixtures, though the ingredient list on many of the best products are blessed with the simplicity of the essence of one.
Here are some essentials:
Rosewater:
The Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra herself used rosewater in her skincare regime. There are a magnitude of benefits to be attained from using pure rosewater as a toner: it helps to balance the skin’s PH levels and controls sebum level, while antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help clear up acne, eczema, dermatitis, scars, cuts and wounds. It can also be used to treat dandruff or to lift the spirits. It’s not difficult to get your hands on but it does range in price with Chantecaille’s lauded glass bottled version selling at £54 for 100ml.
Geranium Water:
Another plant-derived water fostered by ancient Egyptians, geranium water is a refreshing lightweight toning option. Like rosewater it balances the skin's PH and oil while being antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, calming and reducing acne. It will also alleviate stress and anxiety. Disciple Skincare sells it in little green spray bottles that are perfect for spritzing on the go.
Rosehip Oil:
Rosehip oil lies at the base of many skin brightening oils on the market. Packed with essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins A, C, E and B-carotene, it will fade scarring, prevent wrinkles and soften fine lines, as well as heal sun damage. Pai Skincare’s BioRegenerate Oil comes with a pipette applicator meaning that you never use too much.
Turmeric Oil:
Turmeric is the spice of the moment; whether it’s stirred into hot milk for the holistic golden milk, or mix with oats and honey for a natural face mask the humble root has been elevated in recent years. The oil is just as beneficial as the solid or powdered root. It has all of the anti's; anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, antioxidants, and all of which result in the healing, brightening and anti-ageing benefits of this oil. It’s slightly more difficult to get your hands on but it can be found in health stores and of course Amazon.
Shea Butter:
Shea butter is one of those all-in-one products. It’s a sumptuous moisturiser for the body, face and hair that’s rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins A, F and E, whilst providing a little sun protection (SPF 6 to be exact). Use it as a daily moisturiser for smooth, glowing skin (it is also great for fading and preventing stretch marks), or in your hair as a pre-wash or leave-in conditioner depending on your hair type.
